I could not put down this book - it was unlike anything I'd ever read. An unusually gritty, multy-layered multi-ethnic, modern love story with mystery, suspense and plot twists that had me turning pages as fast as I could read them. And by love story I mean all ages, all genders, and all types of love, from romantic to family-based. Truly a tour de force. I look forward to other novels by this author!
The idea behind this story seemed to be a good one, but in execution, I honk the author tried to include too many subplots and characters, so the story seemed like a patchwork effort rather than a cohesive narrative. It was hard to like any of the characters because there was such limited character development. And the ending ? Rushed and unrealistic.
Interesting situation that demonstrates the inequity that abounds between poor and rich and those in other countries who simply want sons to continue their legacy. This book was a nice introduction to the facts that have been in the news recently. It could have used some editing in that some parts were stretched out for too long and he ending was somewhat cut off and simply summarized.
Vanessa Hua has created a world that will captivate you. Without even realizing it you will become enmeshed and invested in the lives she has created. This story blends the precision of a journalist’s reporting with a storyteller’s imagination. Be warned that once you start, you may not be able to do anything else until you finish. This is sure to become a classic.
I was disappointed by this book and the lack of plot depth. I really pushed myself to keep reading, hoping the reward would be found in a great ending. Instead, it was just as bland as the slow progression and roundabout character narratives that never progressed or excited.
From a cultural perspective, there were interesting elements of class, rural v urban upbringings and assimilation to American Chinese life. However, so many other novels have painted these lessons beautifully with so much more substance. I couldn’t take Hau’s depiction seriously.
I loved this book and couldn't put it down! "River of Stars" has it all the fun factor of a beach read (NPR interview aptly characterized it as an "Asian-American, pregnant, Thelma and Louise"); the intellectual spark for a good book group discussion about immigration, assimilation, love, motherhood, friendship and forgiveness; plus evocative writing (many examples, but the description of a first encounter with McDonald's french fries is surprisingly delightful). Highly recommend!
I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. I'm not sure it deserved 4 stars, but I thought it deserved more than 3. The characters were good and well developed. The story moved along and had some surprising twists. It was well written, and an easy read. It certainly made me think a little more sympathetically about the treatment of immigrants in our country - especially under the current administration.
