Beauty in the Broken Places A Memoir of Love Faith and Resilience Allison Pataki David Levy Lee Woodruff 9780399591679 Books

I have never read memoir that moved me so much. Allison and Dave's love story is riddled with beauty and pain, but is built on solid love for each other. Most couples on their wedding day recite vows that commit one another to sticking through it all including sickness and health. Very few consider that particular line will come into play so early on in marriage. Allison not only faces the buckling tragedy of watching her husband suffer a stroke and the fear of the future, but she stays in her marriage. She does not give up on Dave in his darkest hours, but loves him through it all through writing letters and leaning on her support system. We are never meant to walk through life alone, especially in the dark days. This memoir is the most practical and beautiful picture of marriage I have ever read. In marriage one will have beauty and will face pain, but it is how one responds in those realities that will either grow or destroy a love. Allison and Dave rise in love, faith, and perseverance. This book is for anyone who looking for encouragement and strength in loving well in the darkest days, and celebrating life during the brightest. This life is a gift. This would make a great mothers day gift or book club read.

Beauty in the Broken Places A Memoir of Love Faith and Resilience Allison Pataki David Levy Lee Woodruff 9780399591679 Books Reviews

Even in the depths of darkness, the soul has strength.

In her heartfelt and honest memoir, Allison Pataki writes, “I had to believe that sometime, somehow, the sun would break through, and the light would return.”

Beauty in the Broken Places made me laugh and cry, and learn something about myself and humanity.

I work at an academic medical center have witnessed firsthand the damage of neurological diseases physical, mental, spiritual. A stroke can be catastrauphic, affecting the entire family.

But I have also witnessed, as Allison’s story shows, the best of humanity as patients and their loved ones overcome tragedy. The vivid scenes Allison describes of her family and the caregivers huddling together, as one team with the same goal, were candid and authentic and inspiring.

Allison’s prose beautifully juxtaposes the loss and love, fear and faith, crafting a story that ultimately is about gratitude. She writes, “May we always remember how lucky we are.”

.MY REVIEW OF “BEAUTY IN THE BROKEN PLACES A MEMOIR OF LOVE, FAITH AND RESILIENCE”
Allison Pataki, Author of “Beauty in the Broken Places A Memoir of Love, Faith and Resilience” has written an amazing, emotional, heart-wrenching ,captivating and thoughtful memoir. Can you imagine a thiry year old pregnant woman, and her thirty year old husband, (who is a third year medical resident), facing an unknow tragedy?
The author and her husband were off on a “baby-moon” to enjoy a much-needed vacation, when her young husband has a life threatening stroke on the airplane. The Airplane is forced to make an emergency landing, and Allison Pataki is faced life threatening challenges.
The Author starts to write everything down, to keep it as something to show her husband if he survives. I admire the author’s honesty, courage, dignity, resourcefulness, compassion, and loyalty. When the author was struggling to cope she turned to loved ones for help, and she kept praying. Allison Pataki had hope and faith. I would recommend this beautiful written memoir to other readers. I received an ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.
Regardless of where one is on Life's journey, this is a book that is a must read. Allison Pataki has crafted a compelling, brutally frank memoir that weaves personal letters, recaptured memories, medical fact, and family photos into a stirring, unforgettable story about the power of the human spirit to prevail even in the bleakest of situations -- and the deep impact of faith, family, friends and love.

Her words are often laced with wry humor and she offers touching insights, both positive and negative, into the marital dynamic that seem to belie the fact of such a young marriage. She examines her own insecurities and imagined flaws under a stark lens, continually searching for the best way to lead her husband Dave out of darkness as well as focus on the health of their unborn child, while struggling to balance her own professional goals and personal needs.

As a woman in my mid-sixties, long-married to my own college sweetheart, I find myself reflecting on the honesty of Allison's retelling long after my first read. I am uplifted and profoundly moved by Dave's single-minded determination to get well, to battle his way back to his life, his medical vocation, and his loved ones, and by Allison's and Dave's individual strength, grace and commitment to each other, and to their dreams of their life together.

This is not a “loud” book. It is a book that builds through the read, bringing the reader along the harrowing journey and quietly entwining the reader’s personal story with Allison’s and Dave’s. At the end, we feel part of their lives, and truly blessed to have been included. “Beauty in the Broken Places” is a book to gift everyone you love, it is a book for book clubs and libraries. It is an important reminder that Life can change in a moment so count each moment as a gift, and that even in the darkest hours of our lives, there are angels out there, hidden and usually unbidden, both spiritual and real, who will support us and lead us in all manner of generous ways, even as we, personally, cannot seem to find our footing or make our own new path.
