Competence Custard Protocol Gail Carriger 9780316433884 Books

I finished in two sittings, and will probably reread again soon. This book is mostly from Prim's point of view (and then her twin brother's Percy gets some limelight as well), instead of Rue, and I really enjoyed that. This book advances Prim's story, and let's the twins shine. I loved getting into their heads, and I realized they think much more than they speak. Also, they are more alike than they like to think. Really truly, I laughed myself through many pages, felt compelled to read portions out loud to my slightly bewildered husband who also found them funny. This book really gets cat behavior.

Competence Custard Protocol Gail Carriger 9780316433884 Books Reviews

As Prudence and Primrose continue to float around the world, Gail Carriger takes the opportunity to explore the many pairings made possible by her diverse set of characters--including a werelioness, a soulless man, a transgender woman, and some not sure if the feelings they have are ones they should have. Getting some of that settled is the main theme, though there are air battles, vampires, and exotic locales for spice. Often silly, always fun.
This is the third book in the series. Start with Prudence.
I wish to be swept away into a Gail Carriger book! The adventures that they go on, the friendship they share, the tea and nibbles they consume...stuff of dreams! And then this book, Competence, dabbles in philosophy! Be still my heart!!! And I love Primrose and Tash, but even more so, I adore Percy!!! I have heard that Reticence will focus heavily on his character arc, and I! CANNOT!! WAIT!!!

I love the Parasolverse, and I cannot wait to return over and over again! Thank you, Ms. Carriger, for creating such a wonderful world that I can escape into whenever I wish!!!
I am not a fan of Prudence. She doesn't match up to Gail's other heroines. I did really enjoy this book though. And I really enjoyed all the parts from Percy's point of view. He is really cool. I hope we see a lot more of him.

And of course it is full of the same ridiculous, pompous humor this author is known and loved for.

"Primrose strolled along the edge of the dropsy lineup, trying not to look suspicious. She wished she had a parasol with her, parasols always helped one look less suspicious. The straw hat was doing its best for her, but a parasol was always a great deal more effective."
The romance between Rue and Quensel takes a back seat on the Spotted Custard, as more untraditional alliances are explored in this newest installment in the Custard Protocol series. In the Parasolverse, traditions are usually reserved for some forms of etiquette and fashion, but rarely affairs of the heart. As the crew of the Spotted Custard inadvertently becomes the masterminds behind the “L.A. Look,” two couples flirt with love and danger.
This very nearly became the first Gail Carriger book that I didn't finish. Definitely the first I only gave three stars to. It had no plot, only a couple of scenes at the beginning and the end with a lot of filler in between, and none of it was very interesting. The only bright spot of the book, and the sole reason I kept reading, was Percy. He emerged as a truly interesting, well-rounded character with a mind and inner life of his own, and with his whimsies, he was also the only proper Parasolverse character. I'm looking forward to reading his book the moment it comes out.
This fast-paced adventure gives readers insight into a fan-favorite character, while revealing more about the supernatural. The vampires in this book are fascinating and make logical sense within the book's universe. Ms. Carriger, as always, treats different societies and classes with respect. Her depth of research for how they would have been at that time in our own history adds realism and plausibility to a playful, steampunk romp.

As always for a Carriger book, it is the characters and heart that shine brightest. Reading this book will leave anyone smiling and ready to face their fears.
This is not my favorite Gail Carriger, but it was still a solid and entertaining read.

I wish I could have seen more build-up of the relationship between Prim and Tash before everyone started discussing Prim's reluctance to pair off, but I enjoyed seeing Tash and Percy, Rue and Prim discuss the relationship.

The action/adventure portion did seem more easily resolved than in some other books in the series, but I enjoyed the overall story arc. I liked seeing how Prim completely inhabits her role as Purser, and it made the entire venture of the Spotted Custard and its crew seem much more realistic and intentional/organized than it has in some previous installments.

I thought the second romance was sweet and I enjoyed learning a bit more about Formerly Floote.

Percy is now my favorite Custard Protocol character; he was awkwardly adorable and very relatable from start to finish.

I found the resolution of the Spotted Custard's mission quite clever and charming if a bit too quick. And the ending of the novel was sweet and hit me in a personal spot just enough to make me cry, but happily.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the next installment in this series. There's a certain event, a storyline or two, and several characters I really hope are going to make an appearance...
