Excellent and thoughtful writing, however none of the characters made me really even care about them. ?
Wonderful family drama. She writes in a way that the characters are just like someone you might know, she is able to get into their minds in a brilliant way.
Number One Chinese Restaurant is a powerful examination of the interplay between family obligation, selfishness, ambition, and resentment. It is precisely because the characters are deeply flawed, and often cruel, that we learn so much from their folly.
I disliked nearly everything about this book, yet I read it with the hope that it would get better by the end. The characters were not likeable, the conflicts not believable, and the narrative slow and plodding. I wanted to like this book, but I did not.
I read this as a book club selection and could not get through the book. The writer obviously took the recommendation of creative writing coaches and compared visuals to other visuals so that the reader could better understand what he was envisioning - but he took it to extremes, so that comparisons were so rife through the book, it became ridiculous. There was not a single sympathetic character or storyline. I missed the book club meeting, so I am unaware of anyone else from our club's take on the book.
which you couldn't translate? What the life was like, showing up, seven mornings a week, locked in place for all those hours until closing time each night? Late nights, Friday and Saturday. Family members, sons, daughters, doing homework at the restaurant. The grind. The competition, depending upon location. These are things which I have been able to learn something about from the family running a take-out kitchen here. This book fills out the much larger picture, and does so effectively.
I was hoping this would be a good one, but it took me forever to get to chapter 4, and I have little desire to pick it back up to finish. I bought this cause the story is based in Rockville Maryland and I thought it would be an enjoyable read. Sadly, nothing about the town in what I've read, the characters aren't likeable, and the story is slow.
